Have students learn dictionary skills with this fun activity. It can be used as an extension activity for the gifted & talented, as an I’m done now what activity, or just for extra practice to teach and reinforce utilizing a dictionary and thesaurus. Have students learn different synonyms and antonyms by defining the word and playing tic-tac-toe. Students may also increase their vocabulary using the skills taught in this game. This game can also be played alone or with a partner.

  • ❀ 4 How-to posters
  • ❀ 39 Dictionary practice pages (as shown on the cover & preview)
  • ❀ 39 Tic-Tac-Toe cards (as shown on the cover & preview)
  • ❀ Example card to show students how to use
  • ❀ Answer key for the teacher

Print this low-prep resource out and cut along the dotted lines. The resource can be used in various ways: a ring to attach, placed inside a sheet protector, or let students write on the paper.

The student will define the word at the top and circle the synonyms they see on the tic-tac-toe board. The students will put an X on the antonyms. When using this activity, have a dictionary and thesaurus nearby to help to strengthen the skill. Learning new vocabulary words will also help students in reading and writing.
